#13 Kapu

Chapter 1 — The Quest

I am Nuo, the Unbegun
the silence before stars learned to burn.

And thus begins the Thirteenth Wandering of the Unbegun.

Kapu.

Now, children.

We have reached

the Unbegun Cinematic Universe.

The council groans.

Do not encourage me.

Because by now,

characters return.

Objects return.

Places overlap.

One Wandering quietly explains something from another.

Someone you met several chapters ago suddenly walks back onto the screen and says:

Hello.

I have a camera problem.

The council nods.

And so

quest.

Children.

We have had many.

A diverse collection of objectives,

each demonstrating that enlightenment has never been a prerequisite for movement.

Mushrooms.

LSD.

Weed.

A Dota tournament.

The sacred wave pool.

Various relics.

Healing.

Curiosity.

The council looks toward the new file.

And Kapu?

Camera.

The council pauses.

A camera?

Yes.

Beautifully mundane.

Children.

Sometimes the universe calls through grief.

Sometimes through curiosity.

Sometimes through narcotics.

And sometimes

someone’s camera is broken.

The council writes:

QUEST:

FIX CAMERA.

Simple.

Now.

Enter

Stitch.

The council recognizes her.

Of course.

Karkala.

Children.

You remember Stitch.

Friend.

Competent.

Photography enthusiast.

And visually

impossible to forget.

Half her head:

gorgeous,

long,

luscious neon violet hair.

The other half:

shaved.

The council nods.

Balanced.

Clothes?

Baggy.

Psychedelic.

Colours and patterns suggesting she had been appointed official cultural representative of an independent nation whose primary exports were LSD and questionable life choices.

The council laughs.

Stitch.

If Nuo was Chaos with poor logistics,

Stitch was Chaos with functioning motor skills.

Important distinction.

She knew cameras.

She cared about cameras.

She could take photographs that made ordinary idiots look accidentally cinematic.

Children.

Photography was not just:

point phone.

Click.

For Stitch,

there was equipment.

Lenses.

Angles.

Light.

Actual competence.

Which meant when her camera broke

problem.

The council becomes serious.

Damaged.

Needed fixing.

Fine.

Repair shop.

Easy.

The council waits.

Surely Manipal has one.

Children.

Apparently not the one required.

Because here existed our first logistical wrinkle.

We?

Manipal.

Shop?

Not Manipal.

The council sighs.

Of course.

Therefore

expedition.

Not dramatic yet.

No legendary terrain.

No train spanning several states.

No mysterious dealer.

Just:

Camera broken.

Repair place elsewhere.

Travel there.

Repair camera.

Return.

Children.

On paper?

Almost offensively simple.

The council opens a clean itinerary.

STEP ONE:

Leave Manipal.

STEP TWO:

Reach shop.

STEP THREE:

Fix camera.

STEP FOUR:

Return.

The council looks satisfied.

A normal errand.

Exactly.

Which is where the problem begins.

Because normal errands depend heavily on the people performing them.

And the expedition roster consisted of

Stitch.

And Nuo.

Silence.

The council slowly closes the neat itinerary.

Wise.

Children.

Two people.

That is all.

Not a group.

No Sharky.

No Axe.

No responsible third party whose purpose might be to look at us and say:

Maybe don’t.

Just

Stitch.

The Unbegun.

The council writes:

COMPETENCE LEVEL:

Uneven.

CHAOS POTENTIAL:

Elevated.

Now.

Let us be fair.

Stitch brought substantial competence to the equation.

She could navigate the practical world better than me.

She knew what camera needed what.

She understood the point of the trip.

She was not merely decorative.

Children.

If this expedition succeeded,

Stitch was statistically responsible.

And I?

I brought

company.

The council pauses.

That’s it?

Perhaps moral support.

Maybe cigarettes.

Possibly weed depending on historical circumstances not yet introduced into this file.

Archive law.

We do not invent inventory.

The council approves.

So for now:

Nuo.

Present.

That was my contribution.

Which,

children,

is an underrated role.

Sometimes the quest requires a warrior.

Sometimes a guide.

Sometimes a scholar.

And sometimes

someone sitting nearby making comments.

The council laughs.

Still.

The combination mattered.

Because Stitch and I shared a particular problem.

Neither of us possessed much spiritual commitment to keeping an errand merely an errand.

The council leans forward.

Again

not prophecy.

Not telling you what happens.

Just character mathematics.

Put two sensible adults into the formula:

Camera broken.

Shop elsewhere.

They go.

Fix.

Return.

Done.

Put Nuo into the formula?

Potential complications.

Put Stitch

representative of the Psychedelic Nation

into the same formula?

Children.

Seasoning.

That extra little pinch of:

Well, this may become something.

The council nods.

And that is where Kapu enters the Archive.

Not as destination first.

Not:

I have always dreamed of Kapu.

Not:

Something inside me called toward the coast.

No.

The quest was utilitarian.

Camera.

Somewhere beyond Manipal existed a place where Stitch could get the thing repaired.

So we would go there.

The council opens the map.

No.

Not literally.

Children.

This is still pre Wandering philosophy Nuo.

There was no ritual rejection of maps yet.

No grand statement about letting roads choose themselves.

There was simply a problem and a destination attached to the solution.

Stitch knew enough.

I trusted Stitch.

A familiar protocol.

Companion knows.

Follow companion.

The council nods.

Very ancient operating system.

And perhaps that is important here.

Because with a two person expedition,

the dynamic changes.

In Karkala,

there had been four.

People scattered.

People climbed at different speeds.

People conspired behind our backs to put Axe beside me on buses.

Here?

No group chemistry.

No dividing attention.

No background voices.

Just Stitch and Nuo.

Children.

One camera.

One repair quest.

Two idiots.

The council considers.

Promising.

Very.

Now,

Story Nuo did not stand at the beginning thinking:

Ah.

The Thirteenth Wandering.

This shall join the Unbegun Cinematic Universe.

Children.

Story Nuo thought something like:

Sure.

Let’s go.

That is how most old Wanderings begin.

No title card.

No orchestra.

No understanding that the errand will survive in memory long enough to be excavated years later.

Just a yes.

The council nods.

Stitch had a broken camera.

There was a shop.

She needed to reach it.

Somewhere in the decision making process

I joined.

Why me?

Maybe company.

Maybe because we were friends.

Maybe because I had nothing better to do.

The exact motivation is not yet given.

So the Archive leaves it alone.

What matters is:

Expedition roster finalized.

STITCH.

NUO.

The council writes the team name.

Do not.

Too late.

CAMERA RECOVERY UNIT.

Absolutely not.

Fine.

Two idiots with a broken camera.

Better.

Children.

And the objective was so normal that perhaps no sane person would classify the trip as anything more than an errand.

Go there.

Repair.

Come back.

But we already know something about the Archive.

It does not care how respectable the stated objective was.

A Wandering is not determined by what the departure looked like on paper.

The council nods.

But again

we will not decide why Kapu qualifies before the story earns it.

For now,

it is simply a camera quest.

Stitch.

Her half violet half shaved head.

Her psychedelic ambassador wardrobe.

A damaged camera.

A repair shop somewhere outside Manipal.

And Nuo attached to the mission for reasons that probably seemed harmless at the time.

The council looks deeply unconvinced.

Children.

Harmless beginnings are common.

This is why narratives enjoy them.

But Story Nuo does not know he is inside a narrative.

He is just going with Stitch.

The camera needs fixing.

That is all.

So let us begin there.

Manipal.

Camera broken.

Shop elsewhere.

Two person expedition.

Simple.

The council writes the word SIMPLE

and immediately crosses it out.

Children.

Not because we know what happens.

Because we know the ingredients.

Nuo.

Stitch.

That alone is enough to refuse guarantees.

Thus concludes Chapter One.

The Unbegun Cinematic Universe.

The Return Of Stitch.

The Representative Of The Psychedelic Nation.

The Broken Camera.

The Repair Shop Beyond Manipal.

The Two Person Expedition.

And The Camera Quest.

Children.

On paper,

the plan was flawless.

Go.

Fix camera.

Return.

The council looks at the expedition roster.

Stitch.

Nuo.

Then quietly places the paper somewhere fireproof.

And so begins

the Thirteenth Wandering of the Unbegun.

Kapu.
