Chapter 12 — Context

And thus begins Chapter Twelve.

Now, children.

At last

clarity.

Both parties.

Same page.

Maximum Anime had context.

Nuo had context.

No organ harvesting.

No mysterious sale of internal inventory.

No bouncer shaped surgeons waiting with ice boxes.

The situation, stripped of Nuo’s imagination, was beautifully simple.

Girl likes boy.

Girl takes boy to private party.

Drink.

Dance.

Have fun.

Possibly

bonk.

The council nods.

There.

Normal.

Almost aggressively normal.

And naturally,

now that everything was finally understood

Maximum Anime decided to make the situation even less ambiguous.

She remained sitting sideways on the scooter.

Still amused.

Still probably recovering from the revelation that the man she had selected inside Dee Tee

possessed a brain capable of turning:

exclusive party

into:

black market organ commerce.

I stood in front of her.

Wet.

Dripping.

Lake marinated.

Dignity somewhere beneath the waterline.

And then

she reached out.

Took my hand.

Pulled me closer.

Children.

Very close.

The council observes.

How close?

The kind where conversation stops requiring volume.

The kind where Story Nuo’s remaining mental resources immediately left the building.

She looked up at me.

And asked

“You really think I’m so hot that organ trafficking felt more likely than me finding you cute?”

Pause.

The council slowly turns toward Nuo.

Answer?

Children.

Truth.

Pure.

Immediate.

“Uh huh.”

I nodded.

No hesitation.

Because yes.

That was exactly what had happened.

Not as strategy.

Not flattery.

Not:

Perhaps if I tell her she is impossibly attractive, she will like me more.

No.

Children.

I had literally thrown myself into a lake

because the idea that she genuinely liked me

had ranked below international organ crime.

The evidence was already filed.

Maximum Anime looked at me.

And

blushed.

Pause.

Children.

Actual blush.

Visible.

Now.

Was it dark?

Yes.

Streetlight?

Subtle.

Moonlight perhaps.

Not ideal conditions for dermatological analysis.

But this woman was

fair.

Very.

Story Nuo’s current classification remained:

Japanese until proven otherwise.

So when her face shifted toward tomato?

Children.

I saw it.

The council confirms.

Red?

Red.

Beautiful.

This absurd misunderstanding

this whole catastrophic sequence

had somehow translated in her head into an enormous compliment.

Which, when you think about it

fair.

Children.

Imagine being told:

You are so attractive that I considered a criminal organ extraction operation more probable than your sincere interest in me.

That is not ordinary flattery.

That is

advanced.

Unintentional.

But advanced.

The council looks at Story Nuo.

Did you realize this?

Barely.

I was still processing the blush.

Then she said

“You’re cute.”

Pause.

Again?

Again.

But children

different now.

Earlier?

Cute could mean appearance.

Face.

Hoodie.

Whatever strange visual malfunction had caused her to approach me in Dee Tee.

Now?

After lake.

After conspiracy.

After discovering the full architecture inside my head?

This one was not merely aesthetic.

This was

you are an idiot

and apparently I find that endearing.

The council smiles.

Puppy response?

Puppy response.

Exactly.

Children.

The same bizarre phenomenon where an attractive woman looks at Nuo,

sees malfunction,

and instead of retreating

aww.

Dangerous.

For everyone.

Then

her arms lifted.

Rested around my shoulders.

Palms behind my head.

Pulling me closer.

The council already knows.

Yes.

Kiss.

Not a peck.

Not accidental contact.

Not a quick little confirmation.

Children.

An actual kiss.

Full.

Intimate.

Definitive.

The kind of kiss that closes a case file.

Did she like me?

Yes.

Confirmed.

No further committee review.

No conspiracy theory required.

Maximum Anime was kissing Nuo.

Voluntarily.

The council stamps:

ATTRACTION:

REAL.

Very useful.

And children

somehow

somehow

the shit show had helped.

Think about that.

I had misread the entire situation.

Assumed organ harvesting.

Tried to escape.

Jumped into a lake.

Nearly drowned.

Required rescue by the very men I thought were coming for my kidneys.

Then confessed all of it.

And instead of destroying the evening?

It had

improved it.

The council looks offended by cause and effect.

Common sense receives no reward.

Correct.

Children.

Had I behaved normally?

Maybe we still kissed.

Maybe we still entered the party.

Maybe bonk probability remained healthy.

But what actually happened?

Shit show.

And Maximum Anime apparently found the idiot beneath the hoodie

more appealing after discovering the idiot was genuine.

The council considers.

So catastrophe became charm.

Do not call it charm.

I have none.

We established this.

Fine.

Catastrophe became

content.

Better.

Children.

She kissed me.

I kissed back.

Naturally.

I was not going to stand there like furniture twice in one evening.

There are limits.

The lake had already provided enough humiliation.

And for a little while

the evening stopped being strange.

Just

kiss.

No organ theories.

No bouncers.

No lake.

No Mith.

No Dee Tee.

Just Maximum Anime.

Nuo.

And the extremely satisfying confirmation that the impossible looking woman

had in fact chosen the muffin adjacent hoodie creature willingly.

The council nods.

Good moment.

Very.

Then eventually

kiss ended.

Because time,

oxygen,

and whatever narrative machinery controls evenings

continued.

She smiled perhaps.

I probably looked delighted and mildly stunned.

Then

hand.

Again.

Children.

Maximum Anime took my hand.

And off we went.

Back toward

the two giants.

The council looks at them differently now.

Bouncers.

Yes.

Children.

Actual bouncers.

What a relief to finally know everyone’s profession.

They stood where we’d left them.

Wet.

Because Nuo had turned their normal work night into aquatic rescue duty.

And Maximum Anime approached them,

still holding my hand.

The general sentiment of her next request?

“Can the idiot come in?”

The council laughs.

Exact words?

Archive uncertain.

Exact meaning?

Absolutely.

Children.

Could the lake launching,

organ trafficking theorizing,

hoodie wearing idiot

join the exclusive private party?

Apparently the negotiation had resumed.

Now.

If the bouncers had been unconvinced before

done.

Finished.

Because by this point?

They had a story.

One of them said

“The boss would wanna hear about this shit.”

Pause.

The council perks up.

Boss?

Yes.

Children.

New character class unlocked.

The Boss.

Who?

No clue.

What boss?

No clue.

Boss of party?

Boss of building?

Boss of bouncers?

Story Nuo possessed no corporate chart.

But apparently

someone inside would appreciate hearing how the prospective guest

had interpreted admission negotiations as an organ harvesting ambush

and attempted escape via self drowning.

Reasonable.

I too would want to meet that idiot.

The council nods.

And so

entry.

Granted.

Children.

Not despite the shit show.

Possibly because of it.

The same event that had almost drowned me

had now become

credentials.

Private party access approved.

The council opens scorecard.

POTENTIAL BONK PROBABILITY:

Elevated.

PRIVATE PARTY ENTRY:

Granted.

CAUSE:

Idiocy.

Exactly.

Children.

Common sense had contributed almost nothing.

Shit show?

Everything.

Maximum Anime led.

I followed.

Again.

Anime Girl Protocol remained legally binding.

But now with an important update.

Before?

Follow mysterious woman who may steal organs.

Now?

Follow woman who definitely finds Nuo attractive

and has already kissed him.

Children.

Risk assessment dramatically improved.

The bouncers let us pass.

And

inside.

Pause.

Now.

Private exclusive party.

What did those words mean to Story Nuo?

Concept.

Barely.

Children.

I understood each word individually.

Private.

Exclusive.

Party.

But together?

Movie thing.

Rich people perhaps.

Secret entrances.

Guest lists.

People in clothes that cost more than my monthly survival budget.

Maybe drugs in glass containers.

Maybe furniture nobody was allowed to sit on.

The council checks Story Nuo’s cultural database.

Sources?

Films.

Sitcoms.

Stories.

Exactly.

I had seen glimpses.

Characters getting invited somewhere mysterious.

Door security.

Only certain people allowed inside.

Music.

Alcohol.

Social hierarchies.

But actual experience?

Not really.

Dee Tee had entry rules,

sure.

Student ID.

Bouncer brotherhood.

But Dee Tee was still

public enough.

Students knew it.

People came and went.

This?

Different.

Somewhere outside my normal map.

Bouncers.

Boss.

Negotiation required.

Children.

Exclusive.

Private.

Whatever that truly meant

I was about to learn.

And let us acknowledge the route by which access had been acquired.

Not money.

Not status.

Not invitation card.

Not connections.

Not intelligence.

No.

Story Nuo had reached this door because

an attractive woman thought he was cute,

he thought she was an organ trafficker,

he threw himself into a lake,

two bouncers rescued him,

and the resulting story was apparently entertaining enough to qualify as social currency.

The council stares at the sequence.

That cannot be replicated.

Correct.

Do not try.

Children.

This was not technique.

This was statistical vandalism.

And yet

there I was.

Inside.

Still wet.

Still probably smelling vaguely of lake.

Hand in Maximum Anime’s.

Walking into a place that, minutes earlier,

had existed in my head only as:

somewhere special.

Now?

Confirmed.

Special enough to require permission.

Special enough to have guards.

Special enough to have a Boss.

The council watches Story Nuo.

Nervous?

Curious.

Very.

The organ theory had died.

Bonk theory thriving.

And between those two poles?

Party.

New environment.

Unknown rules.

Unknown people.

Children.

Perfect Wandering territory.

Because the farther I stepped inside,

the less useful my Dee Tee expertise became.

At Dee Tee?

Nuo knew the ecosystem.

Knew the bouncer.

Knew the rhythm.

Knew how evenings tended to work.

Here?

Nothing.

Story Nuo had graduated from professor

back to student.

The council smiles.

Appropriate.

Mith had received his free trial of Nuo’s world.

Now Maximum Anime had dragged Nuo into hers.

And unlike Mith?

I had no fisherman lecture.

No map.

No Bongo seminar.

No wall based observation strategy.

Just

follow.

See.

Adapt.

Children.

The shit show had opened a door.

Literally.

And I walked through it.

Maximum Anime beside me.

The bouncers behind.

The Boss somewhere ahead.

The lake incident already becoming story currency.

And Story Nuo

once again

with no clue what the fuck he had just entered.

Thus concludes Chapter Twelve.

The Mutual Context.

Girl Likes Boy.

Boy Likes Girl.

Private Party.

Potential Bonk.

The Hand.

The Pull.

The Question:

“You Really Think I’m So Hot That Organ Trafficking Felt More Likely Than Me Finding You Cute?”

The Completely Sincere Answer:

“Uh Huh.”

The Tomato.

Maximum Anime Blushing Through Darkness.

“You’re Cute.”

The Puppy Response.

The Arms.

The Pull.

The Kiss.

Not A Peck.

The Definitive Confirmation.

The Shit Show Somehow Increasing Attraction.

The End Of The Kiss.

The Return To The Bouncers.

The Relief Of Knowing Their Actual Profession.

“Can The Idiot Join Us?”

The Boss Who Apparently Needed To Hear This Story.

The Approval.

The Entry.

The Concept Of A Private Exclusive Party.

The Complete Lack Of Practical Knowledge About Said Concept.

And

The Cause Of Admission.

Children.

Common sense had achieved nothing.

The shit show had nearly drowned me,

made Maximum Anime like me more,

and gained me entry into a party I had not known existed.

Potential bonk probability?

Elevated.

Exclusive party access?

Granted.

Cause?

Shit show.

The council opens the door.

Nuo enters.

And now

we find out what “exclusive” actually means.
